How Surprise Button Uses AI to Build Kid-Safe Learning Pages

Parents want children to explore ideas without sending them into the open internet. Surprise Button uses AI to help create and organize educational pages, then keeps those pages inside a closed, reviewed library.

The problem we are solving

Kid-safe discovery has two hard requirements. The content needs to fit a child’s age, and the path through the app needs to avoid open-ended browsing, ads, surprise redirects, and unrelated recommendations.

AI helps us produce drafts at the scale the app needs. It does not replace the safety rules, age bands, or human review process.

How the process works

We use AI in a few specific ways:

  1. Content drafts: AI helps draft explanations, activities, examples, and prompts for specific age bands.

  2. Age-band checks: Drafts are checked against the expected reading level, topic depth, and emotional maturity for ages 3-4, 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14-16.

  3. Safety screening: We check for inappropriate themes, confusing wording, unsafe instructions, external links, ads, and material that does not belong in the selected age band.

  4. Human approval: AI output is not published automatically. A human reviewer approves content before it becomes available in the app.

Why the library stays closed

Surprise Button is not a child-facing search engine. Pages live on surprisebutton.com, and children do not leave the reviewed library during normal use. That gives parents a clearer boundary than open web search or algorithmic video feeds.

The parent summary is part of that boundary. It shows what a child explored and gives families a way to talk about the learning offline.

What we are still improving

We continue to improve the review process, reading-level checks, topic coverage, and parent summaries. AI helps with scale, but the product only works if families can understand and trust the content path.

That is the standard we are building toward: a large library of educational pages, a narrow safety boundary, and human accountability for what children see.
