Poetry Analysis

Introduction to Poetry

Poetry is a special kind of writing that uses rhythm, sounds, and images to share feelings or ideas. Poets use lines and stanzas to create their poems. A line is like a sentence in a story, but it can be short or long. A stanza is a group of lines, similar to a paragraph. Poets often play with rhyme, which is when words sound alike, and meter, which is the beat of the poem.

How to Analyze a Poem

To analyze a poem, start by reading it twice. The first time, read it to understand the story. The second time, read it to notice the details. Ask yourself questions like: Who is speaking in the poem? What is the poem about? Where does it take place? Notice the language used in the poem, such as imagery, which are words that paint pictures, and figurative language, like similes and metaphors. Also, look at the structure of the poem, including the number of lines in each stanza and if there is a pattern.

Looking at Poem Structure and Language

Look at how the poet uses sound devices like rhyme, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. Think about the feelings the poem creates for you and why the poet might want you to feel that way. Consider how the poet’s use of language and structure contributes to the overall effect of the poem.

Writing Your Own Poetry Analysis

To write your own analysis, start with a brief summary of the poem. Then, identify the theme, which is the big idea the poem explores. Pick a few details from the poem, such as imagery or rhyme, that support your idea. Explain how each detail works to create the theme. Use words like “shows,” “creates,” or “suggests” to connect the details to the theme. Finally, finish with a conclusion that restates the theme in a fresh way and mentions why the poem matters. Remember to review your analysis to make sure you have summarized the poem, named the theme, cited specific words or lines, connected details to the theme, and reviewed the poem’s overall impact.

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
