Map Keys

What Is a Map?

A map shows places. It can be a picture of a town, a park, or the world. The colors and symbols help us know where things are.

What Is a Key?

A key is a little guide. It tells us what each color or picture on the map means. For example, a blue square might mean a swimming pool.

How to Read a Key

  1. Look at the key box.
  2. Find a symbol you see on the map.
  3. Read the word next to the symbol.
Now you know what that picture stands for.

Why Keys Are Helpful

Keys make maps easy to understand. With a key, you can find your house, the school, or the playground on the map.

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
