Pirates

What Is a Pirate?

A pirate is a person who sails on the sea.
Pirates look for treasure and ships.
They wear big hats and sometimes have a wooden leg.
Pirates lived a long time ago, but we still hear their stories today.

Life on a Ship

Pirates lived on wooden boats called ships.
They slept on hard hammocks and ate simple food like hardtack.
Every pirate had a job. Some cleaned the deck, others steered the ship.
The captain gave orders and the crew followed them.

What Pirates Did

Pirates liked adventure.
They searched for gold, silver, and shiny jewels.
Sometimes they fought other ships to get their treasure.
When they found a treasure, they shared it with the whole crew.

Pirates are fun to read about, but it is important to remember that stealing is not nice.
Today we learn about pirates to explore history and imagination.

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
