Illustration for Estimation

Estimation

What Is Estimation?

Estimation is a fun way to make a good guess. We try to get close to the right answer. It’s like guessing how many toys are in a box.

Why Do We Estimate?

We estimate when we don’t have time to count everything. For example:

  • How many toys are in your toy box?
  • How many blocks are in a tower? Estimating helps us make quick decisions and it’s easy to do.

Try Estimating!

Let’s play a game:

  1. Look at a bunch of pencils.
  2. Guess how many pencils you see.
  3. Count them to see how close you were. It’s okay if you make a mistake. You’re just practicing estimation. Keep guessing and you’ll get better and better!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
