Sound Effects

What Is a Sound?

A sound is a tiny shake in the air.
When something moves fast, it makes the air wiggle.
Our ears hear those wiggles as sounds.

How Sound Is Made

When you clap your hands, the palms hit each other.
The hit pushes the air and creates a “clap” sound.
A drum, a bell, or a computer can make sounds the same way.

Fun Sound Effects

  • Bang! – a loud pop, like a balloon popping.
  • Zoom! – a fast whoosh, like a race car racing.
  • Splash! – water jumping, like a frog leaping into a pond.

You can make your own sound effects with toys, pots, or your voice.
Try saying “boom” loudly, then whisper “shhh”.
Listen to the different sounds and have fun!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
