Muddy Puddles

What Is a Muddy Puddle?

A muddy puddle is a small pool of water mixed with soil.
When rain falls on the ground, the water soaks into the dirt.
Sometimes the ground stays soft, and the water sits on top.
That makes a splashy, squishy puddle you can jump in!

How Puddles Form

Rain drops land on grass, sand, or mud.
The soil absorbs some water, but the rest stays on the surface.
If the ground is already wet, the water can’t soak in fast enough.
It gathers together and becomes a puddle.

Fun Things to Do

  • Jump in the puddle and feel the splash.
  • Look at the reflections of clouds and trees.
  • Collect a small amount of water in a cup to watch bugs.

Staying Safe

Wear rain boots so your feet stay dry.
Watch out for sharp stones hidden under the water.
Never jump into a puddle that looks very deep or dirty.
After playing, wash your hands and feet.

Enjoy the splishy‑splash world of muddy puddles!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
