Rainbows

What Is a Rainbow?

A rainbow is a colorful arch in the sky.
It appears after rain when the sun shines.
You can see red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
These are the colors of a rainbow.

How a Rainbow Forms

When sunlight passes through tiny drops of water, the light bends.
The light also splits into many colors.
Each water drop sends a little piece of the rainbow to your eyes.
All the pieces together make a big, bright arc.

Fun Rainbow Facts

  • A rainbow is always a half‑circle, but we often only see part of it.
  • You cannot reach the end of a rainbow – it moves as you move.
  • Sometimes you can see two rainbows at once. The second one is fainter and its colors are in reverse order.

Look up after a rain shower and you might see a beautiful rainbow!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
