Planets

What Are Planets?

Planets are big round things that move around the Sun.
They are not stars.
They do not shine by themselves.
They are made of rock, gas, or ice.

Our Solar System

The Sun is in the middle.
Eight planets go around it:

  • Mercury – the closest to the Sun
  • Venus – very hot and bright
  • Earth – where we live
  • Mars – the red planet
  • Jupiter – the biggest planet
  • Saturn – has rings
  • Uranus – spins on its side
  • Neptune – far and cold

Each planet has its own path, called an orbit.

Fun Facts

  • Earth has water and air for us to breathe.
  • Mars has the biggest volcano in the solar system.
  • Jupiter has a huge storm that has raged for hundreds of years.
  • Saturn’s rings are made of ice and rock.

Planets are amazing places to learn about!

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
