Water Resources: Earth’s Living Treasure

Water is more than just the splash you feel in a swimming pool. It’s a Resource (something we use and need) that keeps plants, animals, and people alive. In this adventure we’ll explore where water comes from, why it’s important, and how you can help protect it.

1. Where Does Water Come From?

SourceWhat It IsFun Fact
Surface WaterRivers, lakes, and oceans that you can see on the ground. The Amazon River carries more water than any other river on Earth!
GroundwaterWater that lives Underground in tiny spaces called Aquifers (natural water tanks). Some wells draw water from aquifers that are thousands of years old.
Rain And SnowWater that falls from the sky, filling rivers and soaking into the soil.A single storm can add billions of gallons of water to a watershed (the area that drains into a river).

Did You Know? 🌧️ The water you drink today may have been part of a dinosaur’s drink 65 million years ago!

2. Freshwater Vs. Saltwater

  • Freshwater: Has low Salinity (tiny amount of dissolved salts). It’s the kind we drink, grow crops with, and use for cleaning.
  • Saltwater: Makes up about 97 % of Earth’s water and is found in the oceans. It’s too salty for most plants and animals to drink directly.

Cause & Effect: Because only 3 % of Earth’s water is freshwater, using it wisely is crucial. Wasting water (cause) can lead to Droughts (effect), where rivers dry up and farms can’t grow food.

3. How We Use Water

  1. Drinking & Cooking – The most obvious need.
  2. Farming – Crops need water to grow; a single acre of corn can require Over 2,000 Gallons each day!
  3. Industry – Factories use water to cool machines and clean products.
  4. Recreation – Swimming, boating, and water parks bring fun and tourism.

Example: In a city, a single shower can use 10–15 Gallons of water. If 10,000 people shower every day, that’s more than 100,000 gallons flowing down the drain!

4. Protecting Our Water Resources

  • Turn Off The Tap while brushing your teeth – saves up to 8 Gallons a day.
  • Fix Leaks quickly; a small drip can waste 15 Gallons in a single hour.
  • Plant Trees near streams; roots hold soil and keep water clean.
  • Reuse Water – collect rainwater in a barrel for watering plants.

Did You Know? A single mature tree can Filter Up To 1,000 Gallons of water each year, keeping streams clear of sediment.

Mini Experiment: Build a Simple Water Filter 🌱

What You Need

  • A clear plastic bottle (cut in half)
  • Coffee filter or clean cloth
  • Sand, small pebbles, charcoal (activated charcoal works best)
  • Dirty water (mix tap water with a pinch of soil)

Steps

  1. Place the coffee filter at the narrow end of the bottle (this is the “filter” layer).
  2. Add a layer of charcoal, then sand, then pebbles.
  3. Slowly pour the dirty water into the top.
  4. Watch the water drip out the bottom – it should look clearer!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
