What Is a Map?

A map is a picture of a place. It shows where things are and how far apart they are. Maps can be of countries, cities, parks, or even your bedroom. They help us find our way without getting lost.

Reading a Map

  1. Look At The Legend – The legend tells you what the symbols mean, like trees, roads, or rivers.
  2. Find The North Arrow – North points up on most maps. It tells you which way is left, right, and down.
  3. Check The Scale – The scale shows how far a line on the map is in real life. For example, 1 cm might equal 1 km.
  4. Follow The Path – Trace a line from where you are to where you want to go. Count the steps or use the scale to see the distance.

Making Your Own Map

  1. Choose A Place – It could be your school, a park, or your home.
  2. Draw A Border – Sketch the outline of the area.
  3. Add Symbols – Use simple pictures for trees, benches, doors, or roads. Write a key (legend) to explain them.
  4. Mark North – Draw an arrow pointing to the top of the page.
  5. Label Important Spots – Write names for the playground, library, or kitchen.

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
