World Wonders
What Are World Wonders?
World wonders are amazing places that people built a long time ago. They are famous because they are huge, beautiful, or very clever. Travelers from far away would write about them, and today we still talk about them in school and books.
The Seven Ancient Wonders
Here are the seven wonders that the ancient Greeks chose. Only one of them is still standing!
1. The Great Pyramid of Giza
The pyramid is in Egypt. It was built for a king named Khufu about 4,500 years ago. It is made of huge stone blocks that fit together perfectly.
2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
People say the gardens were in a city called Babylon, in today’s Iraq. They were built on tall terraces with trees, flowers, and water that seemed to float in the air.
3. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
This statue was in Greece. It showed the god Zeus sitting on a throne. The statue was made of gold and ivory and was very tall—about the height of a two‑story house.
4. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The temple was in what is now Turkey. It honored the goddess Artemis. The building had many marble columns and was decorated with beautiful statues.
5. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
A king named Mausolus built this tomb for himself and his wife. It was in modern‑day Turkey and looked like a small palace with a tall roof.
6. The Colossus of Rhodes
This was a giant bronze statue of the sun god Helios. It stood at the entrance of a harbor on the island of Rhodes, in Greece. The statue was as tall as a modern skyscraper.
7. The Lighthouse of Alexandria
Also called the Pharos, this lighthouse guided ships safely to the harbor of Alexandria in Egypt. It shone a bright light far out at sea.
How People Built Them
Builders used simple tools like hammers, chisels, and ropes. They moved huge stones with the help of many workers, animals, and clever ramps. Some wonders, like the pyramids, took decades to finish. Builders also used math and astronomy to make sure everything was level and strong.
Why They Matter Today
World wonders teach us about ancient cultures and their ideas. They show how people can work together to create something amazing. When we visit the ruins or read about them, we imagine what life was like long ago. Knowing these wonders helps us appreciate history and inspires us to build new wonders for the future.
