Mean Median Mode Range
What Are Mean, Median, Mode, and Range?
These are ways to understand a group of numbers. Let’s learn about each one.
Mean
The mean is the average of a group of numbers. To find the mean, add up all the numbers and then divide by how many numbers there are. For example, let’s say we have the numbers 4, 6, and 8. First, we add them up: 4 + 6 + 8 = 18. Then, we divide by how many numbers there are: 18 ÷ 3 = 6. So, the mean is 6.
Median and Mode
Median
The median is the middle number when we put the numbers in order. If we have an odd number of values, the middle one is the median. If we have an even number of values, we take the average of the two middle numbers. For example, let’s look at the numbers 3, 5, and 9. Since there are three numbers (an odd number), the middle number is 5, and that’s our median. Now, let’s look at the numbers 3, 5, 7, and 9. Since there are four numbers (an even number), we take the average of the two middle numbers: (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6.
Mode
The mode is the number that appears most often in a group of numbers. A group of numbers can have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all. For example, let’s say we have the numbers 2, 4, 4, and 7. The number 4 appears twice, which is more than any other number, so 4 is the mode.
Range
The range tells us how spread out the numbers are. To find the range, we subtract the smallest number from the largest number. Using the numbers 2, 4, 4, and 7 again, the smallest number is 2 and the largest number is 7. So, the range is 7 - 2 = 5. This means the numbers are spread out over a range of 5.
