Simple Machines

What Is a Simple Machine?

A simple machine is a tool that makes work easier. It changes the direction or size of a force. Think of a lever that lifts a heavy rock or a wheel that rolls a cart. Even though the machine is simple, it helps us do big jobs with less effort.

The Six Basic Types

Simple machineHow it worksEveryday example
LeverA rigid bar pivots on a point called a fulcrum. Push down on one end, and the other end lifts.A seesaw, a crowbar
Wheel And AxleA wheel turns around a central rod (the axle). Turning the wheel makes the axle turn too.Bicycle wheels, a door knob
Inclined PlaneA sloping surface lets you raise things by sliding them up a gentle slope instead of lifting straight up.A ramp, a slide
WedgeTwo inclined planes put together. Push the wedge into something and it splits or lifts it.An axe head, a doorstop
PulleyA rope runs over a wheel. Pulling one side of the rope lifts the load on the other side.A flag pole, a clothesline
ScrewAn inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. Turning the screw moves it deeper into material.A jar lid, a corkscrew

How Simple Machines Help Us

  1. Save Strength – A lever lets you lift a heavy box with a small push.
  2. Save Time – A wheel and axle lets a cart roll far faster than dragging a crate.
  3. Save Space – A screw holds things together tightly without needing a lot of material.

When we combine simple machines, we get more powerful tools. A pair of scissors, for example, uses two levers and two wedges together. That’s why they cut paper so easily.

Try a Simple Experiment

Materials: a ruler, a small book, a pencil.

  1. Place the ruler on the edge of a table so it sticks out a little.
  2. Put the book on the short end of the ruler.
  3. Push down on the long end.

Watch how the ruler acts as a lever and lifts the book. Change where the ruler rests (the fulcrum) and see how the effort needed changes.

Simple machines are all around us. By noticing them, you’ll see how clever engineers use basic ideas to solve big problems. Keep looking, and you’ll discover many more hidden helpers in everyday life!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
