Solar System

What Is the Solar System?

Our solar system is a family of space objects that travel around the Sun.
The Sun is in the middle, and everything else—planets, moons, asteroids, and comets—moves in its pull.
Think of it like a big merry‑go‑round, with the Sun holding the center and the other objects holding on for the ride.

The Sun – Our Star

The Sun is a huge ball of hot gas. It is so big that more than a million Earths could fit inside it!
It gives us light and warmth, which lets plants grow and makes life possible on Earth.
The Sun also sends out energy called solar wind. This wind helps shape the space around the planets.

Planets and Their Secrets

There are eight planets that circle the Sun. They are different in size, color, and what they are made of.

The Rocky Planets

  • Mercury – the closest planet to the Sun. It is tiny and very hot during the day.
  • Venus – covered with thick clouds that trap heat, making it the hottest planet.
  • Earth – our home. It has water, air, and life.
  • Mars – the “Red Planet.” It has a thin atmosphere and huge volcanoes.

The Giant Planets

  • Jupiter – the biggest planet. It has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot.
  • Saturn – famous for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock.
  • Uranus – rolls on its side, so its poles point toward the Sun.
  • Neptune – a deep blue world with the fastest winds in the solar system.

Fun Facts

  • A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.
  • Jupiter has more than 70 moons!
  • If you could drive a car at 60 miles per hour, it would take you over 4 years to reach the Sun from Earth.
  • Space is completely silent because there is no air for sound to travel through.

The solar system is a wonderful place to explore with our imagination. Every planet has its own story, and scientists keep discovering new things every day. Keep looking up—you never know what you might learn next!

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
