Succession

What Is Succession?

Succession is the way nature changes over time.
First, a place might be empty or have only a few plants.
Then new plants and animals move in and grow.
Each step makes the area a little different.

How Succession Happens

  1. Pioneer Species – hardy plants like moss or grasses start the process.
  2. Soil Builds Up – dead leaves and roots turn into rich soil.
  3. New Plants Arrive – taller plants such as shrubs and trees can now grow.
  4. Community Matures – many animals and plants live together in a stable forest or meadow.

Why It Matters

  • It restores places after fires, floods, or farming stops.
  • It creates homes for many kinds of animals.
  • It helps keep the Earth healthy by recycling nutrients.

Succession shows how life never stops moving forward.

How Volcanoes Form

From Magma to Mountain

Volcanoes grow where tectonic plates collide or drift apart. Heat melts rock into light, buoyant magma that rises, cools, and hardens near the surface, building the cone layer by layer.
